Ava Su feels very close to Steve Jobs because of their careers in computer science in California and a drive to live through digital art.

The Zhongqiu Festival is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese people dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China’s Shang Dynasty. The Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October. It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. The traditional food of this festival is the moonlike. The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important holidays in the Chinese calendar. Farmers celebrate the end of the fall harvesting season on this date. Traditionally on this day, Chinese family members and friends will gather to admire the bright mid-autumn harvest moon, and eat moon cakes and pomelos under the moon together.

Contests of Wit

Summary of the five, contests of wit problems set forth by the Tang Dynasty emperor for the five, 5, envoys of border kings of China’s minorities all of whom had wanted the hand of Princess Wen Cheng for marriage in order to have a closer relation with the Han Court of Tang Dynasty, 641 AD, to get more influence from Han’s advanced civilization and culture from the strong and prosperous Tang Dynasty 7 century AD.

1. The first contest: The emperor requested a large pearl the size of a bowl with holes in 9 directions. He challen-ged the contestants to thread this bead. Four of the envoys failed. Gar tied an ant to a silk thread, released
the ant near the hole and blew on it three times. Soon the ant came out the other end of the pearl.

2. The second contest: The emperor ordered the groom to set up a hundred mares and a hundred foals. He asked the envoys to pair the foals with their mothers. The four envoys spent their time studying the characteristics of the animals but could not match the ffspring to mother. Gar asked the groom for advice. Gar decided to feed the foals dry fodder but no water. When the foals were re-leased the next day each thirsty foal rushed to its own mother for milk.

3. The third contest: The emperor gave each of the five envoys a hundred sheep and a hundred jugs of wine and ordered them to consume the wine and the mutton while tanning the hides in one day. The other envoys immediately began slaughtering the sheep and drinking the wine. Before they finished the mutton they were drunk and could not tanthe sheepskins. Gar’s knights first slaughtered the sheep then drank the wine and ate the mutton in small quantities over the course of the day. They tanned the sheepskins and remained sober.

4. The fourth contest: One evening, drum sounded from the palace to summon all five envoys to court. Since Gar was a stranger to the capital he marked his way on the cross- roads so he would not lose his way returning. When the envoys came to the emperor, he sent them away to their lodging right away. The one who arrived at his abode first would be the winner. All four other envoys lost their way home. But with his earlier markings at the cross-roads, Gar quickly reached his shelter.

5. The fifth and last contest: The emperor had the princess mingle with 2499 ladies in waiting all wearing identical clothing as she. He told the envoys to bring her back to him. Gar returned to the court after the others had chosen wrongly. He did not know how to complete this task because he had never seen the princess before; but he remembered that the hotel where he was staying had told him that they had attended to her before. So he sought their advice. Upon returning to court Gar scrutinized each lady until he came to the seventh. Remembering the description of the princess’s appearance and mannerism by his pro-prietress, he chose her and was correct. Shocked and impressed with Gar’s wit, thinking that his master, Tibetan king Srontsan Gampo, must be much smarter than he, the emperor was happy to announce his decision to marry Princess Wen Cheng to such a wise man as Tibetan king Srontsan Gampo, and let Gar bring the princess back to Tibetan king Srontsan Gampo.
