PATV is always on the lookout for interns to assist us in providing public media to the Iowa City area. Interning is a great way to gain work experience and learn various aspects of a broadcast television station. Former interns and volunteers have gone on to careers in fields such as journalism, the film industry, and national broadcast television. If you’re a high school or college student, interning can also be a great way to gain course credit.

PATV’s gallery space has a brand new showing this week. Artist, Jonathan Sabin will be presenting a variety of his photographic works. Jonathan has been known to explore many styles including landscape, travel, and portrait photography. As well as the new gallery showing, PATV will be hosting its Annual Meeting and Awards Show, this Thursday, November 18 at 7pm. Stop by and meet and greet with photographer, Jonathan Sabin and all the PATV producers.

Virtually every organization and business in the world has a logo. Even nearly every program on PATV has its own logo. Access Iowa City has a snappy star logo perfect for t-shirts and mugs. Sports Opinion has a bold logo, with Hawkeye colors of course. Talking with Yale Cohn’s logo is like a trip down talk show memory lane with a bellbottomed retro look. PATV represents so many things to so many different people maybe it doesn’t need an official logo. It’s a community center, broadcast station, and place to learn all rolled into one. Does PATV need a logo?

Your Neighborhood Network, PATV Channel 18 is not only a fun place to volunteer on local television programs, it’s also a place to learn new and interesting skills. PATV offers a variety of workshops that are fun for everyone. Workshops include video camera skills, video editing, intro to broadcast green screen studio, and animation & graphics. Best part is, once you take a PATV workshop you can check out a video camera, sign up for time to edit or make an animation on one of our computer stations, or even check out our studio to make your own video. All workshops are available by appointment.

Your Neighborhood Network, PATV and Uptown Bill’s Coffee House & Neighborhood Arts Center hosted a special tree planting ceremony Tuesday afternoon. The event was a celebration of the partnership between our organizations in providing community arts to Iowa City. Tom’s Guitar Show also performed a special live show at Uptown Bill’s at 6p Tuesday. Uptown Bill’s is located at 401 South Gilbert Street and is right upstairs from PATV, Channel 18.

Iowa City producer, Doug Chaney, best known for his video’s “Tickle My Keys” and “The Iowa City Zombie March” has teamed up with talented Viking/Celtic rock musician, Owen Williams. The dashing duo has been producing a variety of programming from music, comedy, and exciting happenings out and
around Iowa City. Their first program, “The Odin Guitar Show” is a musical extravaganza with characters, Odin and Zeus performing Viking/Celtic rock music. Catch the show on PATV Channel 18.

Mark your calendars! PATV is hosting a special Halloween Night of Horror, Friday, October 29, 9 – 11pm. Iowa’s homegrown monster movie makers, Prescribed Films will be providing a horror movie makeup demonstration. There will be horror movie shorts, skits, scary movie trailers, and much much more. The Smartest Iowan game show will also be doing a special Halloween trivia show. Be sure to wear your scary costume! More details will be available closer to Oct 29.

With the 2010 November elections coming fast, Your Neighborhood Network has a new weekly community talk show, “Talking with Yale Cohn” to take on the biggest local issues Iowa City is facing this election season. While HBO may have its “Real Time with Bill Maher” to discuss national and global politics, Yale’s program plans to feature a panel of guests that discuss current events in Iowa City politics and media. There is a growing trend in communities across the nation. With local newspapers fading away and news broadcasts increasingly focused on non-local issues, a void is being filled through a community effort to provide news and information about the neighborhoods people live in. Here in Iowa City, members of our community have the opportunity to share and contribute to programs at PATV. Volunteers come together to record, edit, produce, or simply offer ideas to provide news & community programming to the IC community.

The Hawkeye Football season is underway and that means Iowa City’s longest running Sports program, Sports Opinion is once again right there in the heat of all the action. Sports Opinion has been airing on your Neighborhood Network for over 20 Hawkeye football seasons. Making it one of the longest running TV sports programs in the entire USA. Each week the talented veteran hosts provide their take on the game of the week. Catch the program every Wednesday at 7p and Sunday at 6p on PATV Channel 18.

Thanks to everyone who came out to PATV’s Labor Day Open House! Now with Labor Day past that means Summer is nearly over. As well, PATV’s Summer interns are wrapping up their internships and moving on to even greener pastures. Ricardo, the animation expert is going away to college. Sean, the swiss army knife of video is wrapping up his degree at the University of Iowa. Michael Salamone is looking forward to pursuing a career in communications and working for a broadcast station.

PATV is hosting a Labor Day Open House from 10 am – 3 pm on Monday. Everyone who comes can recieve a free PATV t-shirt! From noon – 2 pm you have the opportunity to take part in “Open Channel”, an open mic show broadcast live on PATV Channel 18. As well, everyone interested in getting involved at PATV by making your own show, checking out camera equipment, or editing video can earn a free yearly membership by attending our Labor Day intro workshop at 11 AM and again at 2 PM.

PATV has been keeping busy getting ready for our Labor Day Open House. The first thing you’ll notice when you stop by is we’ve been doing some remodeling. We’ve also updated our video editing computers to be easier for everyone to use. Most importantly we’ve been planning the special Labor Day event to be filled with free workshops, a snack-filled producer meet & greet, and the return of PATV’s Open Channel. If you haven’t heard, Open Channel is a show where you get to sing, dance, and express yourself on Live TV!
