One Response to “Newt Gingrich in Iowa City”

  1. Karly Engels says:

    Mic check! Mic Check!

Mr. Gingrich, we are here to protest your speech today, because we object to your callous and arrogant attitude towards poverty and poor people.

We are insulted by your disregard for the poor and the conditions and lead to poverty in this country. We cannot forget your 1990s proposition that welfare benefits to children of unwed mothers be denied.

We cannot forget your continued vilification of poor people as shiftless, lazy, and unwilling to work. Nor can we ignore the fact that your unfair and untrue characterization of the poor is aimed at people of color in this country.

We cannot forgive your advocacy of a laughably low minimum wage, your disgusting suggestions that we bring back child labor, and your sickening, moralistic appeals to the “dignity of work” for the poor while you, Mr. Gingrich, refuse to work and instead support yourself through some of the most unethical and underhanded fundraising schemes known to modern politics.

When we compare your statements to what we know about poverty in our own lives, we are outraged. And our anger is such that we almost forgot to mention your rabid authoritarianism regarding drug laws, your homophobic and ironic support for marriage inequality, your denial of the ethnicity of Palestinians, your denial of climate change, your support for the pharmaceutical companies, and you sense of entitlement over women’s choices.

You do not stand with the people, Newt Gingrich. And we won’t stand for you.
