Social Change with I-Renew

Iowa Renewable Energy Association Symposium & Exposition 2011. Presentation of the documentary, Sustain Angoon. Guest Speaker Dr. Lonnie Gamble. Iowa City, Iowa.

“Central Council Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA or Central Council) is a federally recognized tribal government representing over 26,000 tribal citizens. CCTHITA’s mission is to promote the self-sufficiency of its constituents and the economic well-being and sustainability of communities in southeast Alaska. Central Council, in partnership with the Southeast Alaska Conservation Council (SEACC) and SAGA, is soliciting RurAL CAP/Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium support for the Southeast Alaska Energy Efficiency demonstration project.

As Native peoples of Southeast Alaska, we are stewards of the air, land and sea; we see it as our responsibility to help diminish the dependence on fossil fuels in our communities because burning diesel hurts our people and our environment. New technologies and weatherization techniques hold potential to make our air cleaner and our communities and people healthier.

The Sustain Angoon Project will educate and encourage our tribal members and other rural residents of the State to take action and save energy. High energy costs are a significant burden for most rural communities. We will hold each other up by showing our people how to use electricity and heating wisely and efficiently, and save money for our families.

Just like we help each other within the Tribe, we will work closely with other organizations in our community and outside of it, so that we all can share the knowledge and the benefits of the project with our neighbors. Our partners in this project come from our region, bringing a variety of resources to the table; and we all share the same goal of improving the environment, health, and socioeconomic conditions in rural communities.

Our ancestors always respected Nature and took only what they needed to provide for their families and no more. This is our core value. The Sustain Angoon Project is about taking only what we need; using only as much energy as we need to comfortably live in our homes; using only as much diesel-generated electricity and heating oil as we have to, and no more.”
