Johnson County Crisis Center presents the community walk, Out of the Darkness. This was a fund raising walk to benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. People were encouraged to form teams or participate individually to walk in memory of those who have died by suicide and to raise money for suicide prevention.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, 35,598 people died in suicides in the United States in 2009. Numbers have increased in Johnson County, jumping from 19 in 2008 to 39 in 2009.
According to the Out of Darkness Walk website, suicide is the second-leading cause of death for college students and is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults. The walk had raised $13,852 as of 8:30 PM Sunday, August 22. Half will go to a local crisis center, and the rest will be used for research.
